Objective

Global climate change and human activities are placing increasing pressure on water resources around the World. Farming accounts for approximately 70% of water use in the world today. An increase in agricultural production will be needed to meet the growing global demand for food. This in turn will increase the demand for irrigation. Improvement in water use efficiency and crop water productivity are therefore needed to help resolve competing demands on water resources from agriculture development and water use in other sectors.

The research community has been studying the role of Earth Observations (EO) in monitoring crop growth processes under the water stress conditions. A number of techniques and models have been developed for monitoring agricultural drought and are being used operationally. This workshop aims to serve as a platform for researchers in agriculture and water resources from the international community to come together to share experiences and recent advances in understanding the interactions between water use, agricultural drought, agricultural development and climate change. Thus, the workshop will focus on topics such as:

1. background and challenges for global agriculture and water resources
2. progress in the development and application of agriculture drought models and EO
3. modeling impacts of climate change on agriculture and water resources
4. impacts and evaluation of drought on agriculture production and food security
5. implementation of global agricultural drought monitoring system of systems

Anticipated outcomes from the workshop include understanding agricultural requirements from a global drought information system, the potential design of a joint sub-task between the Agriculture and Water SBAs, and inclusion of Chinese drought monitoring activities into GEOSS.

All those interested in this workshop are invited to participate in these discussions. The host institution has some limited resources to support participants from developing countries. Those interested in attending should contact: Nana Yan, IRSA (yannn@irsa.ac.cn) or Shufu Liu, IRSA(liushf_263@irsa.ac.cn)
