According to the crop growing process from early January to middle September of 2008, the crop condition was better than that of last year before May. Winter wheat was harvested in middle May ahead of time. Influenced by the drought, the crop condition was not as good as that of last year in June. However, with the large-scale rainfall in China in July, the crop condition became generally better than that of last year from middle July to late July. But crop condition became poor again from August due to the drought, flood and typhoon. Until middle September, the crop condition was poorer than that of last year. According to the map on crop condition monitoring with remote sensing, the crop condition in middle September was generally poorer than that of last year. Specifically, about 30% of cropland had better crop condition than that of last year; about 29% remained the same as last year; about 30% had poorer than last year. Spatially, the crop condition was better than that of last year in eastern northeast, southern North China,Central China, northwestern Chongqing and eastern Sichuan, while poorer than last year in western northeast, eastern Inner Mongolia, eastern Shandong, southern Henan, the east coast of East China and the southeast coast of Fujian.
